Chowan County government may be facing a major fiscal crunch, but that hasn’t stopped the sheriff from doing his duty. He arrested a Republican candidate for county commissioner last month after the candidate admitted to stealing a watermelon from a farmer’s field. That’s no small matter — in fact, it’s a felony.

But as this editorial from the Virginia-Pilot points out, maybe Chowan County should focus on more pressing matters:

It’s too bad Chowan’s commissioners, who recently passed an emergency property tax increase of 9 cents to keep the state from taking over county operations, haven’t been paying as much attention to their annual budgets and audits. Their gross financial mismanagement looks far seedier.
