In the most prosperous nation on earth, most Americans have saved little or nothing to fall back on should the paycheck stop.

Fewer than one in four Americans have enough money in their savings account to cover at least six months of expenses, enough to help cushion the blow of a job loss, medical emergency or some other unexpected event, according to the survey of 1,000 adults. Meanwhile, 50% of those surveyed have less than a three-month cushion and 27% had no savings at all.

Yet, as of May:

  • 91% of American adults have a cell phone
  • 56% of American adults have a smartphone
  • 28% of cell owners own an Android; 25% own an iPhone; 4% own a Blackberry
  • 34% of American adults own a tablet computer

Gadgets ahead of financial security — a big and irresponsible mistake.
