The AP’s story on the possibility ? er, I mean IMpossibility ? of Barack Obama having had contact with hastily disgraced Ill. Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) originally carried the following headline:

Not surprising, considering the more last-Democrat-president chuckles that evoked, it has been changed to the tamer, less confusing “Obama: Probe shows no contact in Ill. gov scandal.”

Chuckles are still to be had even in the first paragraph, however. Consider (emphasis added):


CHICAGO ? President-elect Barack Obama said Monday a review by his own lawyer shows he had no direct contact with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich about the appointment of a Senate replacement, and transition aides did nothing inappropriate.


Did you have any contact with the governor? Well, my lawyer says I didn’t …
