It’s interesting that Greensboro Interim Police Chief Tim Bellamy used that same phrase as his former boss David Wray to justify his new fixed-shift policy, a policy that will cost $1.2 million.

I can see Bellamy’s point that rotating shifts do cause hardships on police officers and their families. I can also see how a sense of familiarity is important, especially when doing the important work police officers do. But we all know things happen after dark that don’t happen in the light of day, so does it not make sense that a greater burden will be placed on officers who continually work later shifts? It certainly seems like that burden would be on their families as well.

I also have to wonder about this major move by an “interim” police chief. Does this indicate that Bellamy is the front-runner for the job? And what if Bellamy doesn’t get the job and the new chief is a believer in rotating shifts?
