As development gears up for JLF’s new North Carolina History Project, Director Troy Kickler is already finding and cultivating community interest in the initiative. This month’s Tyrell Tides, a publication of the Tyrell County Genealogical and Historical Society, includes a project description, and last week, Kickler spoke with educators who attended the Bill of Rights Institute’s Teacher Workshop at the Jesse Helms Center in Wingate. Kickler has also authored an essay about a Muslim slave from Bladen County, which will be published in the November issue of Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture. He has also been drafted to write an entry on Benjamin Banneker, a self-educated African-American who helped plan Washington D.C. The work will be included in a 2006 encyclopedia for middle-schoolers.
