In a 5-4 vote, the Winston-Salem-Forsyth County Board of Education approved a $500,000 federal grant to fund a training program for administrators in the district lowest-performing schools.

The four ‘no’ votes –board members Buddy Collins, Irene May, Jeannie Metcalf and John Davenport —took issue not only with the expense, while one of the ‘yes votes —board member Victor Johnson –says:

“We need to stop playing games because I feel hurt about the kids (that are) not being educated,” Johnson said. “We cannot keep doing the same things over and over again. … I want to see some changes and this is the opportunity. We’ve got the money. We need to spend it.”

The vote reverses an earlier board vote against spending the grant money. Opposition at that time was based on MIT lecturer Peter Senge’s involvement with the NationalInstitute for School Leadership, which will conduct the training.
