Jay Schalin at the Pope Center for Higher Education Policy has written several interesting pieces about UNC Chapel Hill’s dubious choices of books for its summer reading program. You’ll recall the national outrage that ensued with its choice following the September 11 terrorist attacks on this country.

Now Jay and his Pope Center colleagues are making their own book recommendations. It’s an amazing, wide ranging list. I’m picking up several of them on my next trip to the bookstore, including one of Jane Shaw’s recommendations:

A Conflict of Visions by Thomas Sowell. This relatively short book argues that there are two fundamentally different ways of viewing the world. The vision we hold determines our attitudes and assumptions about most policy matters. Understanding this point will help students identify underlying philosophies for the rest of their lives.

They’re also asking for your book recommendations. Send yours to either Jane Shaw ([email protected]) or Jay Schalin ([email protected]). The plan is to publish the recommendations on May 9.
