As the Raleigh City Council begins to consider even stricter water restrictions (before the last round are even in place), I am reminded of  an August 2007 Raleigh Little Theatre production of Urinetown the Musical.

Urinetown is set in a Gotham-like city in a bleak totalitarian future in which perennial water shortages have outlawed toilets in private homes and transformed all restrooms into government-regulated privately-run public amenities. By hook and (mostly) by crook, the Urine Good Company and its tight-fisted founder Caldwell B. Cladwell have taken over all the city?s restrooms and UGC charges the public an onerous toll for their use.

Those who can?t or won?t pay are sent to Urinetown and are never heard from again.

What new restrictions does the Raleigh City Council have in mind? Will they outlaw private toilets?  Impose pee fees?  Turn the Dorthea Dix property into ??Urinetown?

Or will they read Joe Coletti’s Spotlight suggesting that water pricing is a better solution to deal with the drought?

Find out next Tuesday when the Raleigh City Council meets.
