You don’t have to agree with Ramesh Ponnuru’s assessment in the new National Review that John McCain is the presidential candidate who best matches the characteristics American voters are seeking.

But it’s hard to dismiss Ponnuru’s contention that Democrats are learning the wrong lesson from their big election victories in 2006:

The Republicans ? were unwilling to stop a foreign-policy disaster, to improve domestic policy, or to discipline their sleaziest colleagues, but they wanted to be re-elected anyway. Not surprisingly, the worst offenders were not. The public rejected incompetence, indifference, corruption, and defeat. The public did not lurch leftward.

But Democrats are acting like it did. On issue after issue, they are running well to the left of public opinion and often to the left of the last Democratic administration.
