Bob Schulz of the We the People Foundation got snowed out of a couple venues and so booked a promotion for Continental Congress 2009 in Asheville. Schulz told how the Magna Carta contained a provision for dealing with unaccountable government. If the government did not respond to petitions, the people could seize everything the king owned except his life. Schulz believes the right to petition for redress of grievances listed in the First Amendment tells how American citizens ought to address lack of government accountability. Yet, letters to Senators and Congressmen are expected to be ignored. Schulz asks if, petition for redress failing, the citizens should be allowed to withhold their support of government. Finding the courts eager to dismiss his lawsuits challenging the interpretation of the right to petition for redress, Schulz wants to hold a new Continental Congress, with about three delegates from each state, to chart a course of action to rein in the federal government.
