Last week at this time, I was listening to the opening talks at the Emerging Issues Forum. The big point of the conference was that the US economy will be in deep trouble unless we manage to get more of our young people into and through college. I think that’s a very weak argument. A country’s prosperity is affected by many more important factors than whether it manages to get the last few marginal students into college so they can obtain a credential and whatever slight educational benefit they might derive. College is not for everyone.
Now, something that is really important is taxation. In this essay, Kevin Hassett of AEI argues strongly that America’s high corporate tax rate is causing capital to go elsewhere.
That, I submit, is a real problem we should be worrying about.
