I’m glad you guys aren’t adding any of the excesses of prog rock to your debate. Yes, King Crimson, and others of their ilk tried to kill rock in the early 1970s.
I also want to put in my two cents to endorse Jenna’s Dark Side of the Moon pick (even if that album already had logged 350 weeks on the chart by the time she was born). Gilmour-era Floyd is certainly worthy of inclusion on any list of great rock.
