Polk County is attempting to build a new building for its Department of Social Services. They wanted a LEED-certified building and contracted with the lowest bidder. Then, workers started complaining to the county about not getting paid. Then, sewage started backing up, and the climate control system leaked and made the place dank. Then, the contractor “walked off.” In determining how best to correct the problems, County Attorney Jana Berg recommended litigation. The county is now looking at contracting for an assessment of shortcomings. The sewer lines can be fixed, although services will be disrupted for extended muck-hauling. Experts don’t quite know how to fix the HVAC system, yet.
