The Franklin Board of Alderman decided which nonprofits will receive how many thousands in change goin’ jing-a-ling-a-ling in their pockets. That is not news except there was some resistance. Candidate Angela Moore said charities should be supported through voluntary, not forced, contributions. Personally, she did not want her tax dollars to support gay rights activists or abortion. Town Attorney John Henning, Jr. said that would not happen, as recipients must provide “a service that benefits the community as a whole.”

For example, Appalachian Animal Rescue spays and neuters animals to keep stray populations off peoples’ porches. The Arts Council provides opportunities for youth to turn to a life of poetry instead of vandalism, the Macon County Care Network will purchase badges and lanyards for volunteers so random citizens don’t accidentally lend a hand for a public purpose, and the Scottish Tartans Museum will purchase a garment steamer to stave off a global honey shortage from a proliferation of moths robbing America’s most beloved pollinators of precious nectar.
