Over at the North Carolina History Project online encyclopedia, we have added some exciting new entries.

Willis P. Whichard, a former Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, has contributed an article on Alfred Moore, the second and, to date, last North Carolinian to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Though a minor figure in the history of the Supreme Court, Moore famously fought Tories and the British in North Carolina during the Revolutionary War.

Dr. Richard Gamble, who serves on the history faculty of Hillsdale College, has written a piece on Claude Kitchin, a U.S. Representative from North Carolina who served as Speaker of the House during the First World War. In spite of his Democratic affiliation, Kitchin was a vehement opponent of Woodrow Wilson on questions of U.S. foreign policy.

The director of the history project, Dr. Troy Kickler, has added an article on the Salem Brass Band, a group formed from traditional Moravian music societies to serve as a military band for the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The Band was tasked with boosting the morale of the 26th North Carolina Infantry, a regiment that suffered exceedingly high casualty rates.

We hope you’ll check out the encyclopedia–new articles are added every week.
