Democratic U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler of N.C.’s 11th Congressional District blamed John McCain the other day for blocking the SAVE Act immigration bill. But that charge is being disputed in many places, not the least of which is the McCain camp itself. Here’s McCain campaign strategist Steve Schmidt’s take:

The comments with regard (to phone calls that he made) are false. It makes me wonder if Health Shuler had one too many encounters with a linebacker in his previous profession.

Whom to believe here, Captain Amnesty or a guy from the other side who could very well have ginned this up as a way of kneecapping the GOP nominee among his base on an issue in which he already has zero credibility? If Shuler’s telling the truth, how come none of the border enforcers among the House GOP who surely would have gotten wind of McCain’s meddling have leaked this anonymously to the media?
