I cannot comprehend the humility and courage of principled people who find themselves in positions of power, when they know wannabe swine like me are on the sidelines projecting political aspirations into their every sneeze.

Such was the case during Asheville City Council’s meeting Tuesday. Dr. Carl Mumpower expressed his wishes that the City of Asheville make E-Verify more accessible from its web site. E-Verify helps employers check the documentation of suspected illegal job applicants. Mumpower was not running for Congress at the time. Instead, the media was saturated with top headlines about the strong principles and leadership skills motivating the suspension of his campaign. Meanwhile, the campaign to elect his would-be opponent, Heath Shuler, continued fundraising with no free advertising.

Anyway, Mayor Terry Bellamy, who is of the same political persuasion as Shuler, stated that the Chamber of Commerce was working with the community to direct internet traffic to the E-Verify feature on Shuler’s site. A majority on council decided not to alter the city’s web site to tilt the balance of Google-ranking in the once and future candidate’s favor.
