All four of North Carolina’s NAEP scale scores (reading and math for grades 4 and 8) increased from 2005*. But none of the four increases were statistically significant, i.e., the difference was likely the product of chance or random variation. Put simply, North Carolina’s performance on the NAEP tests did not change from 2005 to 2007.

North Carolina was among 30 states that showed no significant change at either grade in reading. Similarly, North Carolina was among 17 states and DoD schools that showed no significant change at either grade in math.

* Note: NAEP math and reading tests are administered every two years.
