Yesterday, a report in the Watauga Democrat bode ill for the county’s next fiscal year. In fiscal 2008-09, tax revenues had decreased; sales taxes had dropped 9.45%. The county had to reduce its budget 10% in a climate of increasing demands. No end to the recession was foreseen in the near term.

Today, the paper reports the commissioners approved connecting greenway segments. It also selected a firm to design an 80,000 sq. ft. indoor recreation center. The center has been sitting on a back burner for twenty years. The commissioners rationalized they wanted to take advantage of low construction costs and interest rates.
