We’ve gotten accustomed to the calls for more spending on everything from K-12 education to terrorism, based on supporters’ contentions that there’s either (1) been progress but there’s still so much more work to do, or that (2) we’re just not up to snuff at all, compared to other folks. Now comes a fascinating third reason to spend more of our money: in North Carolina, we’re too good! This ridiculous assertion comes from Jerry Baker, the consultant hired by UNC to help with the search for Molly Broad’s replacement. Here’s part of what Baker had to say, according to this story in the Durham Herald-Sun.

“The prestige of the institution does speak for itself. The compensation needs to reflect the prestige.”
