Max Kampelman, who worked for Hubert H. Humphrey as well as Ronald Reagan, tells a story about HHH that is in stark contrast to the way current Democratic senators view a Republican president:

I recalled witnessing an exchange between Hubert Humphrey, then a senator, and a group of liberal friends who were severely critical of his occasional legislative support of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In response, he firmly asserted: ?I don’t know who your president is, Joe, but my president is Dwight Eisenhower, and if I can be helpful to my president in a manner consistent with my conscience, I will be.?

Sadly, only Joe Lieberman seems to fit this mold these days.
