In the course of venting about the online edition of the local Knight Ridder outpost, Christine at Save CMS Kids makes an interesting observation:

They put a bunch of rollover adds that take over your screen. It’s lame. It is not an effective ad for Bloom, it’s a map.

I would read more regularly again if Ann Doss Helms or Peter Smolowitz wrote a blog together…

Quick, go to the local KR paper’s main page and try to find a blog. Any blog. Richard Rubin’s Running Mate blog is certainly well-hidden. And alone.

Now compare that to the frankly a little too blog-happy papers in Raleigh or Greensboro. See a difference?

I’m open to another way of explaining it, but I have to conclude that the potential loss of tight editorial control scares the upper reaches of the local KR outpost. Or is it prospect of intense interaction with readers? Odd, in any event.
