Commuters have indicated they are unwilling to pay enough to sustain train service between Salisbury and Asheville. Taxpayers have indicated they are unwilling to subsidize it. The state is therefore trying to get the taxpayers’ grandchildren to pay for it. The rail project is one of six the state is trying to fund with a total of $75 million in newly-printed money from the federal government.
