The Mountain Xpress printed a story with a human interest angle on HB 11, “No Postsecondary Education/Illegal Aliens.” It featured a girl who is having to work odd jobs to put herself through college.

“I’m not ashamed of being undocumented,” she explains. “That’s just a label that’s been imposed on me. I’m a human being, and that’s not who I am.”

What’s more, almost all college applications require a Social Security number. Another girl lacking citizenship was charged out-of-state tuition, and a lad was told he couldn’t sign up for classes until all documented persons seeking to do so were placed. The bill did not pass, but it still may be approved as a rider on another bill.
