An English professor nails it here, pointing out that many students just can’t take criticism.

Many students sail through their K-12 years getting high grades for bad writing. (Is it because teachers can’t tell that it’s bad writing, or that they’re afraid to say so? Probably some of each.) When they get into college, they might encounter one of those old-fashioned profs who insists on clear and correct writing. The students, convinced that they really deserve As, get upset and blame the prof.

The Pope Center will soon release a paper on why writing instruction in college has tanked. Someone should take a look at K-12.
