The term liberal used to refer to the philosophy of freeing the individual from the state. At some point in the latter 19th century and early 20th century, liberals switched gears and began to run to the state to “save” individuals from industry. People with this big-state, socialist philosophy still bear the moniker “liberal” (which, appropriately, they despise), and it has become commonplace to refer to them as “liberal,” even though, in the true sense of the term, they are not.
