Local Tax Could Put Regional Rail Project Back On Track

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina’s senators say a commuter rail plan for the Triangle will not get the support of the federal government, but there is still a local tax in place to pay for it.

Every time you rent a car in Wake, Durham or Orange counties, there is a 5 percent surcharge.

Despite the lack of confidence from the federal government, the Triangle Transit Authority said it will continue to collect the tax.

The Car and Truck Rental and Leasing Association wants the tax repealed.
