I’m seeing a lot of talk among Greensboro City Council candidates —– namely Robbie Perkins, Nancy Vaughan and Sandra Anderson Groat —- about a “regional alternative” to the White Street landfill for Greensboro’s waste disposal.

I thought current —-soon to be former—- council member Mike Barber explained very well why a regional solution isn’t the answer: there’s no incentive for other governments to participate in a regional waste authority because those cities have added capacity to their landfills in recent years. In other words, they didn’t make the mistake —as Greensboro did —– of closing their landfills with the potential for many years capacity.

Keep in mind that talk about regionalization is a excuse to take eyes off problems that exist within the city limits.
