At Tuesday night’s meeting, Greensboro City Council member Tony Wilkins got three other council members —two of them newly elected —- to vote with him on his motion that property taxes will not be used to help pay for the proposed downtown performing arts center.

Wilkins also ran a referendum up the proverbial flagpole, and fellow council member Yvonne Johnson —a potential swing vote—said she would consider voting supporting a referendum once the “financial uncertainties” were resolved.

That might take a while, especially now that City Manager Denise Turner Roth—former Mayor Robbie Perkins’ point person on the project— is departing for D.C.

That Johnson concedes that she is uncertain about GPAC’s financial structure —-and that the N&R’s Allen Johnson concedes that “it needs to be clear that, if push comes to shove, property taxes could have to help pay for the city’s new performing arts center”—- should give everyone pause about this project.
