After thinking it over for a year, President Obama is still opposed to same-sex marriage.

During an interview with ABC News on Monday, Obama said gay couples should, at a minimum, have strong civil unions. But he stopped short of backing gay marriage.

So the next time the president campaigns in North Carolina, will same-sex marriage lobbyists such as Equality NC and The Campaign for Southern Equality wave signs and protest at his campaign stops? If the folks  at the Campaign for Southern Equality are intellectually honest, they will.

The point, they say, is to draw attention to the human consequences of the law and, as with the civil rights movement, create a situation where the federal government intervenes to change state laws.

“What we’re calling for is full federal equality, and we’re sending a very consistent message that these laws are on the books right now and they’re immoral,” said Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, executive director of the group, which plans to expand its efforts across North Carolina and the South in 2012.

True, the president’s administration is not defending the federal Defense of Marriage Act. So why won’t President Obama say he supports same sex marriage? And will the activists call him out for it?  I won’t hold my breath.
