New Hanover County voters could decide to return Rep. Thomas Wright to the General Assembly.

As a convicted felon, he would be barred from serving. But the quoted report indicates it’s not clear whether Wright lost his eligibility to serve on his conviction date, April 7. It’s possible that Wright would remain eligible for service in elected office until his appeals are exhausted. State elections officials will ask the General Assembly this year to clarify the law.

Wright will not have a hand in making that clarification. His House colleagues expelled him before his criminal conviction.
