In a rare city council race for 2006, Pat Delair, won a seat on the
city council to replace the seat vacated by Bill Saffor as he was
appointed to the Mayoral post vacated by Spence Broadhurst.  The
race was hard-fought, but it is interesting to note that Pat was
anti-convention center.  Buried deep in the story:

Christopher Dean, New Hanover County Republican Party chairman, said he
believed Hearne, a Republican, was caught in a “perfect storm” blowing
in Delair’s favor. Voters were concerned about sewers and council
support of the downtown convention center project

Of
worth, Delair was everywhere even showing up at an educational forum
sponsored by AFP and publicly going on record with her concerns about
the convention center.  The whole story is here,
but of concern should be the uptown Republicans pushing such big
government projects like the convention center in Wilmington despite
the facts here and here
