Two things I despise about modern business models are the notion that corporations are supposed to be in the business of gifting and that they are supposed to pad their bottom line with government grants. That said, I really like how AVL Technologies started. A kindly, conscientious gentleman started it up in his basement. But then, when it came time to expand, he accepted Buncombe County Industrial Facilities and Pollution Control Financing Authority bonds, albeit indirectly. With a little help from government, the company is able to pay for a Habitat for Humanity home for a lovely young family. AVL Technologies is doing big business, and doing many wonderful, pro-social, pro-green things. It just seems the money could be more efficiently appropriated without the middleman.
