A Goldsboro woman says she accepted money from a video poker machine operator to make a campaign contribution to N.C. House Speaker Jim Black.

Monica Absalao — who was then known as Monica Kirby — says she was dating the operator at the time.

Absalao says the man — Gary Mitchell — paid for her $500 money order at the same time he was purchasing his own money order for a campaign contribution.

But elections board members say they have no record of a money order from Mitchell.

Board chairman Larry Leake didn’t believe Absalao’s explanation. He asked her whether the true story was that Mitchell asked to use her name for his own contribution.

“No, it was my idea,” she said.
