A WRAL News/SurveyUSA poll released Tuesday shows that there is solid support for private school vouchers in North Carolina.

It was not long ago that the word “vouchers” would scare off a sizable chunk of poll respondents.  Not any more.

Support for vouchers among Democrats and those who identify as “very liberal” was a bit surprising.  Overall, 40 percent of Democrat respondents supported or strongly supported private school vouchers (51 percent opposed), and 46 percent of “very liberal” registered voters polled were vouchers proponents (42 percent opposed).  To be honest, I expected support from both groups to be much weaker.

Around 55 percent of African American respondents and 47 percent of those from low-income households gave vouchers the thumbs up, while 32 percent and 44 percent, respectively, were anti-voucher.
