Haywood County put its solid waste services out for bid. It received three responses, and one would operate with savings for the county. Santek of Cleveland, TN, was willing to be bonded to guarantee that the landfill would operate another thirty years with as much as 325 tons of trash a day hauled from Haywood and, a new feature, other counties.

Commissioner Kevin Ensley asked why Santek could get 30 years of life out of the landfill at 325 tons a day and the county couldn’t.

“Experts in their field do things better,” said Commission Chairman Mark Swanger, who serves on the solid waste committee. “County government is just not an expert at solid waste management.”
