Ouch. Yes!Weekly editor Brian Clarey says the alt-weekly misquoted Forsyth County District Attorney Tom Keith in the article that prompted calls for Keith’s resignation.
Odd article from the Winston-Salem Journal, however. Editor Brian Clarey is never mentioned by name, and he’s not quoted in the article. Almost as if they’re covering up for one of their own.
Update: Yes!Weekly announces the error on its blog, along with transcripts and audio of the interview with Keith.
Update 2: A detailed update from the Journal:
The article was written by Keith Barber, who recorded the interview. Brian Clarey, the editor of Yes! Weekly, said yesterday that he and Barber talked several times Tuesday as outrage grew about Keith’s comments. Clarey wanted to post an audio clip of the quote online. Barber called Clarey later that night after he found out that he had misquoted Keith, Clarey said.
Yesterday, Clarey listened to the recording of the interview and immediately called Keith to apologize.
“When you’re working on deadline, you’re just rolling,” Clarey said. “Ultimately, this is my fault. I’m the editor of this paper.”
He declined to say whether any disciplinary action would be taken against Barber, saying that it is a personnel matter. He said he will be taking a closer look at the paper’s policies and procedures to make sure that something similar doesn’t happen again.
“My main concern was setting the record straight,” he said. “This was something I should have caught before it got to this point.”
Imagine this — local ministers calling for Keith’s resignation are unsure if this changes anything.
