As a fair-skinned person who has endured many sunburns in my life, I fully understand the concern expressed in a policy statement from the American Academy of Pediatrics over kids and teenagers using tanning salons. I part company with the AAP, however, with their solution. The group is endorsing a ban on the activity. I say the decision, and responsibility, is up to the parent, just as it is up to the parent to determine how much time their children spend outside in the sun, which by the way, also leads to skin damage and possible skin cancer over time.  Will the AAP endorse a ban on playing too long in the backyard on a sunny day? Of course not…or will they?
