Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines has received a letter from Dell VP Kip Thompson confirming the amounts owed to each entity to be repaid by the computer company. Yippee.

I’m not sure taxpayers should be comforted when Joines says the payback —– down to about $9 million after the city pays off Dell-related debt —- could go “toward initiatives that would create jobs, such as a small-business development fund and other economic projects.” They also shouldn’t be comforted when City Council member Dan Besse says taxpayers could actually profit from the repayment. At least Forsyth County Commissioner Dave Plyler is talking about lowering taxes once the county gets back its $7.9 million.
