First Governor Easley vetoes the Goodyear bill (House Bill 1761) because “it would set a dangerous precedent for North Carolina’s economic development policy and is not fair to taxpayers. Then the General Assembly, in a specially called session, passes an even worse bill (SL 2007-552) that gives a $60 million cash payment to two international multi-billion dollar tire companies.
On Friday, just three days after the Great Tire Give Away, it is announced that Unilever, a soap and deodorant maker in Hoke County will get $120,000 in state and local money. Unilever has cut two thirds of its workforce in recent years but has promised to add back 25 jobs over the next three years. For this, they get $120,000 in taxpayers’ money. Read about it here.
