According to kids interviewed for the Charlotte Observer’s “Young Voices” column, the state should eliminate standardized tests. No surprise there. Kids also like the idea of shortening the school year.

Here are some comments from my young friends about the proposal to shorten the school year:

“Taking away five school days is also a good idea. It will save money and we don’t do much on the last five days anyway.”

“Ending the year five days earlier is a good way to save money too. No one does anything the last five days but watch movies.”

“The state should think harder to save money. They should come up with many things to save money; shortening is one, but there’s more.”

“In my experience, we never do anything after testing, except watch movies, so I can agree with taking off five days.”

“There is also talk about cutting the school year back five days to save money. I don’t have much opinion on this, because I don’t know how much money it saves. If it saves enough money to make a big deal about it, I have no problem with it.”

The children hath spoken.
