State House lawmakers last week approved legislation designating the Collard Festival in Ayden as the state’s official collard festival. While there’s no money associated with the designation, the event will get even wider recognition.
Committee chairman Joe Echel says the festival hopes that if people come from all over the state, they may want to settle in the Pitt County town that’s just outside of Greenville. He says it’s a nice place to live and start a business.
North Carolina already has three official state festivals — the Hertford County Watermelon Festival, the Fair Bluff Watermelon Festival and Folkmoot U-S-A in Waynesville as the official international festival. Hertford County’s festival is the state’s official northeastern watermelon festival while the Fair Bluff event is the state’s official southeastern watermelon festival.
