I just received an email news release from FEMA notifying North Carolinians that the deadline for applying for federal funds for damage suffered during the April 16 tornadoes is June 20. It included the following eyebrow-raising quote:

“While many people are already receiving federal disaster assistance, there may be some who still have not registered because they think they don’t need help,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Michael Bolch.

I can’t think of a better nanny-state quote than this one: Individuals cannot make these determinations by themselves. Government has to do it for them.

Note: I don’t have a link for this, since it came in an email and doesn’t contain one.
