I have no idea why the authorities in Hickory are proceeding they way they are, but that vacuum should not invite the kind of lurid, freakshow coverage we are starting to see on this case.
We are getting into a dangerous, frothing herd every bit as blind and bumbling as the one that stumbled after the Duke lacrosse case or the balloon boy. Take a deep breath, look in the mirror, and act like responsible adults confronted by a sea of madness.
