In this season of giving, businesses may consider making a charitable donation to the North Carolina Employment Security Commission. Donations received before December 16 may be tax deductible, but there is no guarantee. The NCESC needs the money because its unemployment claim fund ran out of money in February, and now owes $1.4 billion. The federal deficit has been helping to cover claims since FY2001-02, when the fund first ran dry.
Should your company decide to bankroll the contribution by laying off a few employees, it would further help the fund because it will increase your corporate tax rate.
