Yesterday’s meeting of the House task force that’s looking into unemployment benefit fraud produced this disturbing fact: North Carolina paid out $556 million in improper payments between 2008 and 2011. Half a billion bucks — gone. From the Triangle Business Journal:

That translates into an improper payout rate of 8.86 percent, according to fiscal researchers at the North Carolina General Assembly.

Improper payouts involving allegations of fraud hit an estimated $12 million during the same time period, around 2.4 percent of total payouts.

Wake County Rep. Marilyn Avila is the co-chair of the task force.
