After batting around ideas on how to fund Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s school construction needs, which involved three separate committees that never could seem to make ends meet, leadership has finally agreed on a compromise. The compromise, nothing more than a stopgap measure drummed up as a show of solidarity between rival education factions, is dependent upon Governor Easley’s signature. The lease-purchase bill that awaits the Governor’s OK lets developers pay for new schools/renovations and then lease them to the school system. School systems could save millions, says Terry Stoops in the Rino Times of Greensboro.
