…. in today’s N&R:

….David Wray might still be police chief if he’s just fired James Hinson for conduct unbecoming an officer. But guess what? Firing Hinson would have compromised Wray’s efforts to reach out to the black community…..

Throughout a lengthy article and lead editorial, the real solution to poor member attendance on local boards and commissions –eliminate them — warrants only a footnote:

Another solution: Eliminate some boards, Greensboro City Councilman Mike Barber said. The groups involve residents in government, he said, but that might be a luxury taxpayers can no longer afford.

“The question of whether that is financially feasible is valid,” he said.

Thank you, Mike Barber…..

…Why couldn’t Yvonne Johnson cuss and slap her hand on the table when Mitchell Johnson was trying to explain the Willow Oaks deal? I’d love it if council members would act like this on TV…..

…GCS superintendent Terry Grier wants all graduating seniors to have a free ride at GTCC. Brilliant idea. The cost? Between $9 and $21 million. Grier’s going to discuss the idea with local leaders, with no mention about where the money’s coming from. I wonder how county commissioners will react, especially after hearing that they’re supposed to front the cost for rebuilding Eastern Guilford…..

..UNCG geography professor Jay Lennartson thinks a little too much while pedaling around Greensboro on his bicycle:

My car was a cocoon of sorts that sheltered me from the environment and other people. Now that I have to rely on my own two feet, my bike and the bus to get around, I’ve become acutely aware of how my actions, and those of others, can negatively affect the environment.

My new sense of connectedness has heightened my awareness of the numerous environmental problems confronting the Triad.

Urban sprawl, air and water pollution; trash disposal problems; loss of green space and numerous other environmental problems pose a clear danger to the quality of life in the Triad.

Funny, that’s not what I was thinking as I pedaled around Greensboro on Friday afternoon. I was thinking how crisp and fresh the air was and how clean, green and yes–bike-friendly- our city is. Maybe I just don’t ride where Lennartson rides.
