Hopefully The Chalkboard will follow up on this bit of information from last night’s Guilford County Board of Education meeting:

In other business, the board…..formally decided to use an expected insurance settlement on Eastern Guilford High School to pay back the loan to rebuild the school. The board has requested $53 million in certificates of participation from the Guilford County Board of Commissioners.

Right off the bat, I would worry that the insurance settlement won’t be as much as expected. I didn’t see last night’s school board meeting, so I don’t know if administration staff presented any projected numbers.

I was up at First Horizon Park with my cell phone turned on, waiting for city council member Dianne Bellamy-Small to call me back. Don’t worry, I didn’t hold off on the beer waiting for that to happen. The guys down at Carolina Journal requested an online story about the Recall Small movement. There’s not much new to report because the Guilford County Board of Elections is still verifying the petition. The board should be done soon before sending it back to the city for more work before it’s presented to the council.

Whether or not a recall vote is pulled off depends on timing, and it’s going to be tight. Once a recall election is set, it has to be reviewed by the Department of Justice, which will take at least 60 days. But state law dictates that a special election cannot be held 60 days prior to or after a scheduled election. So with an October 9 primary, a recall vote would have to happen by Sept. 4.

I spoke with Recall Small spokesman Jonathan Wagstaff and he’s pleased with the work of local officials. He believes it will be pulled off.
