…That’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, for those of you not up to speed on bureaucrat lingo.

For starters, Davidson County commissioners vote to get out of the Winston-Salem MPO:

Some commissioners had raised concerns about a weighted voting system used by the planning organization. Over the past few months, (Billy Joe) Kepley, the vice chairman of the board of commissioners and the county’s representative on the transportation group, has complained about the weighted voting system.

He and other commissioners say they believe that the system is unfair and does not give Davidson County an equal voice on transportation matters. The regional transportation group helps set priorities for transportation projects in Winston-Salem and surrounding communities, including northern Davidson County.

Meanwhile, Greensboro’s MPO, led by City Council member Robbie Perkins, is pushing a $200 million transportation bond. I’ve often accused veteran N&R reporter Taft Wireback of environmental bias in his reporting, and I think his lede bears that out when he writes that “City voters might be asked for $200 million in November to cut down those exhaust fumes they’re breathing every day waiting in traffic.”

That’s never been a problem for me because I keep the windows closed and the air conditioner running.
